Employment Opportunities at the James B. Moran Center for Youth Advocacy

 

2025 Summer Legal Clerkship Program

Clerks will primarily focus in one practice area, but there may be opportunities for clerks to take cases from multiple practice areas. If you are interested in more than one area, please note it in your cover letter.

 

Criminal Legal Clerkship (1 position available):
The law clerk will work closely with staff attorneys in representing youth in juvenile delinquency,
adult misdemeanor/felony cases, and support the record remediation (expungement and sealing)
program as part of a holistic legal-social work team. The clerk will provide case management,
interview witnesses, perform investigations, conduct legal research, assist with plea bargains,
prepare mitigation reports, and will have the opportunity to participate in trials. Clerks with a 711
license will be given an opportunity to actively participate in the representation of clients. The clerk
may also be asked to assist with trainings on legal rights in the community. Law students eligible
for a 711 license are encouraged to apply.


School-Based Civil Legal Clinic Clerkship (1 position available):
The Moran Center’s innovative School-Based Civil Legal Clinic is a legal-school partnership that
addresses families’ varied, complex civil legal needs that can impact a child’s ability to stay in school.
The law clerk will work with Moran Center attorneys to provide civil legal services, primarily in
housing, family, employment and consumer law, for disinvested families with children attending
Evanston’s schools. The law clerk will support all aspects of representing clients in civil legal
matters, assisting with the general operations of the clinic and assisting pro bono practitioners. The
law clerk may draft pleadings, manage discovery and correspondence, conduct legal research,
conduct case intakes and file court documents. Law students eligible for a 711 license are encouraged
to apply.


Education Advocacy Clerkship (1 position available):
The Summer Law Clerk will work closely with the Staff Attorneys and Managing Attorney of the
Education Advocacy Program representing students. The Education Advocacy Program (“EAP”)
advocates to ensure that children with special needs, learning disabilities, mental health challenges,
and/or traumatic experiences receive an equitable education with the support and services they
deserve. The EAP represents students who are attending or are entitled to attend Evanston and
Rogers Park schools. The clerk will provide case management, interview clients and potential
witness, review school records, conduct legal research, attend Individualized Education Program
meetings, 504 meetings, education advocacy meetings, and/or disciplinary meetings. The clerk may
also be asked to assist with trainings on legal rights in the community.
